This 1999 Honda Accord Wagon 2.3 SiR is one of the latest cars I found on the Japanese market.
It is a non-smoking vehicle with only about 52,000 miles, on the odometer. That is relatively low mileage for its age, leaving plenty of opportunity for its next owner to enjoy it. The cabin and cargo area also appear to have been well maintained, offering both everyday practicality and the understated character of a Japanese-market Honda.
You may occasionally see an Accord from this generation in the United States, but this wagon version was not offered in the American market. That makes it a familiar-looking Honda with a much more unusual presence.
When this car was introduced in the late 1990s, SUVs were rapidly gaining popularity in the United States, while the market for traditional station wagons was beginning to shrink. Even so, a wagon offers several advantages that are easy to overlook.
Its lower center of gravity gives it a more car-like and stable driving experience than a typical SUV. It can also provide better highway comfort and refinement, while still offering a large and useful cargo area for shopping, road trips, and everyday life.
Now that SUVs have become the default choice for so many buyers, perhaps it is time to rediscover the station wagon. Its low, streamlined profile, enjoyable road manners, and practical cargo capacity create a combination that remains difficult to replace.
