Market Finds

1990 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4

At first glance, the 1990 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 may look like an ordinary four-door sedan.

But this car is far from ordinary.

This vehicle I found in the Japanese market is a 1990 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 VR-4 4WD with only approximately 9,940 miles. It is also a one-owner car from new, with service records showing regular dealer inspections every two years.

Finding a Galant VR-4 in this kind of condition is becoming increasingly rare.

The Galant VR-4 can be seen as the predecessor to the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. It was a rally-inspired sports sedan built with Mitsubishi’s advanced technology of the era, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, full-time 4WD, and performance engineering developed with Group A rally homologation in mind.

The production version produced around 195 horsepower, while the Group A WRC version was said to produce more than 300 horsepower.

More importantly, the Galant VR-4 proved itself in competition. It achieved six overall victories in the World Rally Championship, helping establish Mitsubishi’s presence on the global rally stage before the Lancer Evolution became the brand’s most famous rally icon.

This car was born during Japan’s bubble era.

It was a time when Japanese manufacturers invested heavily in engineering and built cars with a level of ambition that is difficult to find today. The Galant VR-4 reflects that mindset clearly. It looks understated and refined, but underneath, it is a serious performance machine.

In other words, it is a true wolf in sheep’s clothing.

For a JDM collection in the United States, a car like this would have real significance. It is not only rare and well-preserved, but also historically important. It connects Mitsubishi’s rally engineering, the rise of 4WD turbo performance sedans, and the road that eventually led to the Lancer Evolution.

But it does not need to be treated only as a garage piece.

The Galant VR-4 is also the kind of car that could be driven and enjoyed, offering a genuine taste of Japan’s automotive golden age. Its appeal is not loud or obvious. It comes from the combination of restraint, engineering depth, and motorsport history.

For the right buyer, the 1990 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 is more than a rare JDM sedan.

It is one of the cars that explains how Mitsubishi became a serious force in rally performance.

Understand before you decide.
